Hae Ji Chang

Hae Ji Chang, soprano, has been described as “an exciting young artist on the rise” (Opera Boston) with a voice “full of silvery color and nuance” (Boston Globe). Recently she performed Pamina in Mozart’s The Magic Flute with Opera San Jose. Last Season, Ms. Chang sang Gilda in Verdi’s Rigoletto with PORT Opera and made her debut at LA Opera as Frasquita in Bizet’s Carmen conducted by Plácido Domingo, with subsequent appearances as the First Lady in Mozart’s The Magic Flute and as Crobyle in Thaïs, as well as Sarah in the Cathedral production of Jonah and the Whale under the baton of James Conlon. As a Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist, Ms. Chang sang Lucia in the Rape of Lucretia, presented by LA Opera and the Colburn School. In the past, she performed Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro with Aspen Opera Theater, Pamina in The Magic Flute with Saint Louis Symphony and Pacific Symphony, Euridice in Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice in Jordan hall with NEC Philharmonia under the baton of Sthephen Lord. She covered the role of Giannetta in Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore with New York City Opera in 2011. As a Gerdine Young Artist, she also covered the role of Mélisande in Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande with Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. In the concerts, she was the soprano soloist in Fauré’s Requiem with Colorado Music Festival Chamber Orchestra and sang Exultate Jubilate K.165 with West Los Angeles Symphony in Royce Hall. Ms. Chang made her international concert debut in Moscow and St. Petersburg last June. Ms. Chang also made her debut with Baltimore Symphony Orchestra as Ste. Marguerite in Honegger’s oratorio, Jeanne d’Arc au bûcher, which also marked her debut at Carnegie Hall. Ms. Chang received an Artist Diploma at the New England Conservatory and a MM degree at Manhattan School of Music. Ms. Chang won many competitions such as, Plácido Domingo’s Operalia Competition in Verona, Palm Springs Opera Guild, Metropolitan Opera National Council, Peter Elvins competition.
In the future, she will make her debut in Seoul, her hometown, as Marguerite in Gounod’s Faust and Seattle Opera(Setsuko from An American Dream), and Opera Theatre of Saint Louis (Mimi from La bohème).
